Of Mice and Men Claims and Evidence

I argued that George did the right thing about killing Lennie himself, instead of all the angry men doing it  and even more so reading my peers responses. One popular claim was that by having George kill Lennie, Lennie died fast and without pain instead of a slow and scary death. "Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering" (Steinbeck 106). George managed to shoot Lennie right in the back of the head, instantly killing him. The other men would have made him suffer and confuse him because he often had no clue of what was going on, but this way George had him think of a happy dream and Lennie passed away with no fear. Another  great claim was that maybe if George could have helped Lennie escape then he could of lived, even if he was going to have to be independently, because George could have told the guys that Lennie would have escaped to another part. That way Lennie could live and George wouldn't have gotten in trouble for hiding him. " I can go right off there an' find a cave,- an' never have no ketchup - but I won't care" (Steinbeck 100). Even though there was a slight chance Lennie could ever survive on his own, George could have still taken the chance and tried to save his best friend from being killed. Lennie was all George had, and George was all Lennie had. Even though it gets tiring looking out for someone you care about because they can't do it themselves doesn't mean you should kill them and not even try to help them survive. Both point of views were arguable and had interesting claims.

Mental Health Infographics

I found it interesting to find out that women have anxiety more than any other type of mental disorder, including impulse control, because I would have thought that women would be more impulsive and act on their impulses rather than anxiety. My favorite infographic was the Mental Health in America, because it had helpful visuals  to understand the percentages better and was not over loaded with unnecessary information that made it boring to read.

Executing Criminals Who Are Mentally Ill

I feel that states legally executing mentally ill people for crimes shouldn't be allowed because they can't control their actions or emotions as well as we can. They also lack the ability to choose from right to wrong, making them incapable to defend themselves in court. Mentally ill people who commit crimes should be entered in a facility where they can be treated and monitored, not be executed for something they don't understand was a crime. It surprised me that the court thinks Mr. Ferguson is lying about being mentally ill, even though he has been diagnosed for over 40 years. This article relates to the character Lennie, from Of Mice and Men, because both he and Mr. Ferguson are mentally ill and have committed a crime where people thought they should be killed.

Of Mice and Men Claims and Evidence

Atreyu and Nicole think mentally ill people should not be sentenced to death. Autumn thinks that George should not have killed Lennie because they had such a emotional connection that I and many other people would not have been able to kill or leave their companion. The online debate on collaborize did impact our feelings by having us see how many people were against what we thought.

Of Mice and Men Claims and Evidence

Pro: If George had not decided to kill Lennie Curley would have killed him instead. Evidence: "I'm gonna shoot the guts outa that big bastard myself..."( Steinbeck 98)

Pro: Even if they did not kill Lennie, he would have still ended up in jail or a mental institution. Evidence: "S'pose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage" (Steinbeck 97)

We would argue this topic pro because Lennie would have died anyway and when George killed him it made it a peaceful death.  "I'm gonna get him. I'm going for my shotgun."

Of mice and men claims and evidence

Pros:  If George didnt kill Lennie someone else would have. And someone else would have killed him more painfully

George made it so Lennie was happy before he died

Cons: Lennie died when he could have been institutionalized.

They could have run away again and Lennie would still be alive.

Of Mice and Men Claims and Evidence

We do not all agree that George killing Lennie was the right decision. On one hand, it was the realistic choice compared to what could have happened to Lennie back then. However, Socrates said that two wrongs do not make a right, so killing Lennie was not the right choice. We were pretty set on what we thought, so no, Collaborize did not change our decision.  "' Maybe they'll lock him [Lennie] up an' be nice to 'im'" (Steinbeck). "'Curley gon'ta wanta get 'im lynched...'" (Steinbeck).

We would be Pro, and the collaborize didn't affect our views because we were all already Pro. They knew they had to kill him because someone else would've.

Of mice and men claims and evidence

George chose to make sure Lennie was happy when he died. " 'Look acrost the river, Lennie an' I'll tell you so you can almost see it.' "

George had not decided to kill Lennie in the end; someone else like Curly would have gladly did it instead. "I'm gonna shot the guts outa that big bastard myself, even if I only got one hand. I'm gonna get goin.' "

Of Mice and Men Claims and Evidence

The two strongest arguments from our class  were the facts that Lennie was going to die anyway and the only way for him to die in peace was if George shot him. George shot him while he was happy rather than being violently shot by Curley or sent to a mental hospital. If George had let the other men come and kill Lennie, there would have been a lot more chaos and violence. Lennie would be scared and upset, and he would not know what he did wrong before he died. However, since George killed him, he gave Lennie the opportunity to die happy and in peace. "'An' s'pose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage (Steinbeck 97). If George had not shot him and he had not died, he would have been poorly treated at a mental hospital.

To us, one of the most interesting things was the fact that women attempt suicide more than men, but men are more successful. Also, the fact that 90% of people were receiving treatment was surprising. One last fact that interested us was that 1 in 17 Americans live with a serious mental illness. We enjoyed the first one (Facing Mental Illness) because the information was laid out in a creative and easy-to-read way. The pictures also added to the quality of the Infographic.

Women experience serious mental illnesses at roughly twice the rate of men, but are 50% less likely to seek treatment. The physical movements of schizophrenia are just as bad as the mental effects. Good news!: 90% of people that receive treatment recover. We liked the "Facing Mental Illness", because it had a lot of interesting statistics and it was very colorful and stimulating.

What We found most surprising in the first one was that 1 in 5 children have a mental disability. In the second infographic, 57.5 billion is spent in annually on mental care. We found the second infographic the most visually appealing because it used a clipboard for the background similar to what a doctor would look at when examining a patient file. It also included many percentages a visual representations of data and what goes on in the minds of the mentally disabled.

1.) That OCD isn't a huge mental disorder, that eating disorders weren't as High, and that 90% of people are receiving treatment.

Executing Criminals Who Are Mentally Ill

We think that people with mental illnesses should not be killed unless they are a major threat to society and cannot be controlled. Depending on the crime they commit they should not be killed. If someone only commited robbery they should be kept under house arrest in a familiar environment but under constant surveillance. If someone commits murder it should be seen at what the cause was. One thing that surprised us was that Ferguson managed to kill eight people on two separate occasions. This article is about someone who is mentally ill and killed multiple people like Lennie who, however, only killed one person and was convicted of murder with the penalty of death.

Executing Criminals who are Mentally Ill

I believe that yes its sad that mentally ill people receive the death penalty, but its sad when anyone does. I think mentally ill people who commit crimes should not be treated differently because laws are made for a reason and there should not be exceptions. One bad thing that happens is when people are put on trial for murder they try to make the court believe they are Mentally ill to get out it. I don't think mentally ill people should be sentenced to death, but I think there should be a very strict line between being mentally ill and not when it comes to matters such as the death penalty. Its a very difficult issue but two of us agree that mental illness is a complete handicap and is not punishable by death though they should still take some consequence.

Atreyu, Autumn, Nicole

It was surprising to us that 1 in 17 Americanslives with a mental disability. We never realized how common mental disorders are. The "mental illness by the number" was the most interesting, because, again, it is surprising to see how common these mental disorders are. The organization of the inforgraphic is intriguing. It has the percentages in huge font, and then it goes into greater detail and different statistics below each percentage.

In our group, two of us agreed more, and we thought that mentally ill people who don't understand what they are being tried for should not be executed. Dylan thought that they could still be executed if they knew what they were doing at the time. We connected this to Of Mice an Men in how Lennie kills Curley's wife. He doesn't really have that ability to distinguish between right and wrong.

Dylan, Maddie, Taylor

Executing criminals who are mentally ill

Our group believes that the sentence depends on the type if crime and the type if illness. Executing is morally right if it's better than life without parole for that person and the people around them. Some people who have mental disorders don't understand or have a recollection of what they did. This should be taken into account.

We believe that the penalty for a mentally ill person who committed a crime should be based on the severity of the crime and their knowledge of what they did and why they are being punished. Ferguson's mental state surprised us because he was unable to comprehend his actions.

Executing people who are mentally ill

It is justified to execute mentally ill patients, because if they don't understand what they did wrong after decades of treatment, then they probably never will.  An attempt to cure mentally people who have committed crimes should definitely be made before a decision on what to do with them is reached. This relates to Of Mice and Men, because this man had murdered people, just as Lennie accidentally killed Curley's wife. Even if these were not their intentions, life is not worth living if you are harming not only yourself but also bringing pain to others.

Executing Criminals Who Are Mentally Ill

We think that executing people who do not know what they did is wrong. We also think that the mentally handicapped that commit crimes should be put in legitimate hospitals. We found the fact that people think that Ferguson is "faking" being mentally ill even though he has been properly diagnosed with a mental disability. This is connected to the novel because Lennie knows he did something wrong, but does not know what it was that he did.

Of mice and men claims and evidence

The claim stating that 'curly was going to do it anyway and probably make him suffer, where as George did it fast' was a good argument because curly said, "I'll shoot him in the guts. Come on guys" (Steinbeck, 96).  The claim George shot lennie out of love is supported by, "

Shooting lennie like an animal,"right in the back of the head. He wouldn't even quiver,"(Steinbeck 45).
Shooting lennie was in humane "George raised the gun and his hand shook,"(Steinbeck 105).

Of Mice and Men claims and evidence

I think that it is right for George to have killed Lennie. When we read the other post we also got a god sence on why it was wrong for George to have killed Lennie. They gave great resins on why it was wrong and they had great evidence.  A textual evidence that was very strong is that there is a strong difference between the definition of murder and mercy, and George had mercy. A quote they can use is "'you hadda George. I swear you hadda'" (Steinbeck 107). They next strong thought is that George had the opinion to face the men and tell them that Lennie had mental disabilities that prevented Hume form knowing what he is doings at time. "Sure, like you always done before. Like 'If I didn't have you I'd take my fifty bucks--'"( Steinbeck 103).

Pro: if George had not kille him Levine would have ended up in a mental hospital or being tortured by Curley. Also Lennie died happy if he had been killed by Curley he would not have died happy.

Quote: "ill kill that big son if the bitch myself. Ill shit em in the guts" ( Steinbeck 96)

Pro: There is a strong difference between the definition of murder and mercy and what George did to Lennie was in the utmost respect a form of mercy.

Quote: "Lennie begged, 'lets do it now. Lets get that place now'

Of Mice and Men Claims and Evidence

I agree with George's decision. The debate did not impact we still agree that George should have killed Lennie. As mentioned in many points displayed Curley would have hurt Lennie then George ever did by shooting him.

OMAM Claims and Evidence

We would argue this topic in favor in George killing Lennie. No, it did not change our opinions because we strongly believe that George was in the right for killing Lennie out of love not of hate. Some textual evidence for that George killed Lennie out of mercy not for murder is, " s'spose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage. That ain't not good"

Mental health

For the pro argument, the best argument was explained how if George did not kill him, Lennie would have ended up in a mental hospital or for tired by Curley. Lennie died happy and calm unlike what would have happened if Curley killed him. "..Curley's still mad about his hand. An' s'pose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage.." explains how his death would have not been the same if George did not kill him.
For the com arguments, the argument that explained how shooting Lennie would not have solved anything that they should have faced their problems and work through them. "..I'll fin' a cave an' I'll live there there so I won't be no more trouble to George" displays how there were other options instead of just killing him.
We feel that it was better for George to kill Lennie that no one would have helped him get better that he would have died anyways.

Best positive post: if George had not killed him, Lennie would have ended up in a mental hospital or being tortured by Curley. Also, Lennie died happy, if he had been killed by Curley, he would not have died happy.

Best Negative post:
I think shooting Lennie was a terrible idea, because it made their problems vanish instead of facing them and working through them. George had the option to face the men and tell them that Lennie had mental disabilities that prevent him from knowing what he is doing at times.

We all agree that it was good for George to end Lennie's life because he did not want Curley to torture him. Curley stated "I'm gonna shoot refutes outa that bastard my self, even if I only got one hand. I'm gonna get 'im"( Steinbeck 98). It was very hard for George to kill Lennie, "the hand shook violently, but his face set and his hands steady" ( Steinbeck 106). George ended Lennie's life in order for him to die happy.

Why was he ever released if he had killed someone before and they knew he was mental.

We enjoyed the info graphic "Facing Mental Illness" because the information was set up better which made it more interesting, and the color scheme went better. We found it interesting how 1/5 children has a mental disorder.

We found surprising that 1 in 5 children and 1 in 4 adults are diagnosed with a mental illness.
We also found interesting that every 15 minutes a person in the United States commits suicide. That's 35,040 people a year that die in our country from committing suicide. We like the second Infographic the most because it used diagrams to explain the mental illness and what happens in the brain and body.

We all believe that killing mentally ill people whomhave committed a crime is wrong because killing people is immoral.  The states should treat the mentally ill who have committed crimes with certain levels of severity based upon the level of mental illness that the person possesses.  We were surprised that a man who had his level of mental illness was being out on the death penalty.

We believed that mentally ill people should not be sent to prison or be killed. There should be more mental hospitas. Jail are not a place for the mentally ill and we should invest instead in having more mental hospitals instead of spending millions of dollars to kill them.  Lennie also was executed for his mental problem, but Lennie was going to be killed even if George did not do it.

Executing Criminals Who Are Mentally Ill

Muriah's and Emily'S view was we believed that a person with a mental disability don't know the difference between right or wrong. Charles' view on this was felt that they shouldn't be executed but should be punished for wrong things they do. Also since Furgenson has a 40 year of having mental illness it was already in the court system. Someone who has a mental disability deserves to be in a place where they are accepted since society views them as social outcasts.

Executing crinimals who are mentally ill

I think it is wrong for states to execute mentally ill people, they should be put into a mental institution instead of jail where there are are people who know how to handle mental people. I was surprise that they are still thinking on executing John Ferguson even though there is a law stating that you can not. Just because someone has a mental illness does not mean they are dumb they just have a hard time dealing with life. I feel like this is kind of like Mice of Men,they both are deciding whether it is right or wrong to execute someone for there disability.

No, he didn't even know what he did! Even though he killed 8 peoplehe didn't know what he did, but it really depends on what illness he has and if he really knows what he did.  He deserves to die because he killed 8 people and he should suffer the consequences.  I don't think he should die because his mental state doesn't allows him to actually understand what he is doing. If you kill a man who doesn't know why he is being killed, you are basically doing what he being convicted of, muerder.

I believe that mentally ill people who comit crimes should be out in a mental hospital.

Executing criminals who are mentally ill

As a group we believe that it is not right to execute a mentally ill person if he or she does not know what they are being executed for. If a mental person is to be kept of held somewhere they should be held in a mental hospital that could benefit them. We were surprised to find that even after the Supreme Court had ruled, in 2007, that a mentally ill patient should not be executed if they did not know what he or she was being executed for.

Mental Health

Criminals who are mentally ill should not be executed. They should be getting professional help to try to cure their illness and help them with their problems. It surprised us that people with schizophrenia have high IQ's and that he was going to be put to death then delayed 40 years then decided to go ahead and do it. Lennie would have ended up in jail or been killed by the other men for committing his crime. If he was sent to jail he probably would have been executed for the crime he committed even though he was mentally ill.
